SPIE Defense and Commercial Sensing

Virtual SPIE Defense & Commercial Sensing Conference
12 – 16th April 2021

Chromacity will join the global photonics community at the SPIE Defense and Commercial Sensing conference.

The virtual conference attracts leading researchers from security and defense agencies to learn more about emerging technologies within remote sensing and stand-off detection.

Laser-based FTIR spectroscopy can be used to detect chemical signatures which are harmful to people, assets, and the environment.

Whereas legacy technologies such as Quantum Cascade Lasers have been used in FTIR spectroscopy to detect hydrocarbons (such as methane), QCLs deliver only a narrow linewidth and this restricts the capability to detect multiple gases at high resolution.

Chromacity’s tunable picosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) provides instantaneous broadband width laser light making it ideal for high-resolution FTIR spectroscopy and stand-off detection to identify multiple chemical signatures in real-time. The Chromacity OPO can be integrated into an FTIR spectrometer to interrogate multiple chemical signatures simultaneously. With its high optical power, it is possible to take measurements at a significant distance from the source emission.

In a study with the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences (IPAQS) at Heriot-Watt University, an experimental set-up demonstrated the Chromacity OPO’s stand-off detection capabilities to acquire high-resolution gas absorption spectra of hydrocarbon emissions (methane and ethane) from distances of up to 200m.

In more confined space or inaccessible areas, light from the Chromacity OPO can be deployed via fiber delivery to detect concentration levels of harmful gases like Carbon Dioxide.

Within the 5-12µm fingerprint spectral region, the high brightness of the Chromacity mid-IR OPO also offers the potential to characterise volatile organic compounds, such as sarin and VX gas.

The Chromacity OPO can be installed remotely with minimal set-up required. For more information about the stand-off detection capabilities of the Chromacity OPO, or the virtual SPIE Defense and Commercial Sensing Conference, make an enquiry:
